In 1995 the town of Carmanville signed a municipal stewardship agreement and has since become an important link in wetland conservation in North America. A group of volunteers later formed the Carmanville Habitat Committee and development of the Carmanville Wetland Nature Trail began.
The town was identified as having a significant wetland habitat located within it's municipal boundaries and waterfowl "Hot Spots" were identified through preliminary field surveys and discussion with local residents, birdwatchers and naturalists. The objectives of the stewardship agreement included restoring, enhancing, and protecting the important wetlands in Carmanville, as well as to promote a greater appreciation of wetlands and wetland values.
In 1996 the Adopt-A-Goose program was launched, two local students Wendy and Cayla Eastman volunteered to be designated caretakers and on November 29th, 1996 the students were recognized for their outstanding performance as foster parents on behalf of the Provincial Government North American Waterfowl Management Plan and Eastern Habitat Joint Venture.
The trail is located on Route 330 across from the Carmanville South Access Road. Approximately 2.5km of the nature trail has been completed and an additional 2.5km are in developing stages. The trail is intended for walking, jogging and enjoying natures beauty, you'll find it has many unique features and will win the heart of all nature lovers, birdwatchers, and tourists.
